He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering\, with a focus on Ocean Engineering from University of Victoria. Over his 18 years in maritime technology as engineer\, researcher and consultant he executed influential and highly cited work on wave energy\, served as convener of the IEC committee on wave energy performance assessment\, helped International Governments invest >100M in marine tech\, and regularly served as judge for US DOE WPTO Blue Economy prize competitions. Scott now leads MarineLabs as they operate and expand a continent wide fleet of sensors fused with an expanding set of weather models and data sources.  Through CoastAware\, MarineLabs has developed a path to coastal intelligence at scale. In this presentation\, Dr. Beatty will present CoastAware and its current geographical extent\, current status of collaboration projects with USCG and Canadian Coast Guard\, and discuss future opportunities that will aid Marine Navigation

In his role as Legal Counsel\, Ryan advises the Fund’s Administrators on their compensatory decisions. His work also includes pursuing financial recovery from liable shipowners and their insurers\, sometimes in the Federal Court. Prior to his legal career\, Ryan was a teacher on both sides of the Pacific. When not at his desk\, he might be found in the mountains\, along the coast\, or in the kitchen. It’s not easy to keep him inside on a sunny day.

DESCRIPTION:Marine Learning Systems\nA technical seminar by Elisabeth Dent\n\nIn a rapidly changing world\, how do we make mariners safe and competent? As the workforce and climate changes\, how do we make sure that the next generation of marine professionals has the best possible understanding of this role? Marine Learning Systems has developed advanced training tools that were designed–here in British Columbia– to address these very questions. That is why the Royal Canadian Navy\, Coast Guard\, and BC Ferries are already using our technology. \nIn a world where we rely on connectivity\, Marine Learning Systems has created a platform that works with little to no connectivity at all. In environments like the Arctic\, for example\, we make sure that all mariners have access to learning materials at all times\, even when out of satellite range. It is critical that we raise the level of competency beyond compliance. It is not enough just to deliver courses with the assumption that everyone is paying attention. In this talk we will discuss the philosophy and mainstays of these systems and how they support the mariner’s understanding\, training\, and career progression. \n************ \nElisabeth Dent has worked in IT sales for 19 years\, but specifically in the marine industry since 2016. She is passionate about the impact that technology can make on safe operations\, and minimizing human error. She has seen firsthand how much benefit a traditional industry can see with a blending of technology and the wisdom and lineage of seasoned professionals. Elisabeth previously worked on the railway in three countries. She is a Vancouver native who currently lives in Victoria.

DESCRIPTION:BC Branch Supporting Maritime Learners: In 2023 the BC Branch worked with the Camosun College Foundation to create an annual $1\,000 award to learners in the college’s nautical programs. In May 2023 an awards ceremony was held at Camosun College and the first award was presented. This award reflects BC Branch’s work to achieve The Nautical Institute’s aim of working with universities and other educational institutes and authorities in the furtherance of education and training in nautical science and practice. The recipient\, Numa Dorling\, is considering a career in the Canadian Coast Guard and had the opportunity to speak about opportunities with Captain (retired) Norm Thomas\, BC Branch member and former Commanding Officer in the Coast Guard. \nNuma Dorling\nNautical Institute BC Branch Maritime Studies Award\nTo recognize deserving students studying in the Professional Studies and Industry Training program\, specifically in the Nautical & Marine training program.\nNuma was a member of our Bridge Watch Rating Program and was the top student in her class. During class\, she was focused\, asked excellent questions and participated well in class discussions. She is a positive and upbeat person in the classroom and works well independently and with her classmates. She shows great promise for a great future within the marine industry. SUMMARY:Western Maritime Institute Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:NIBC hosted a luncheon at Western Maritime Institute on 07 December 2022. VTF Bursary certificates were presented to Jason Houston and Jacqueline Halliday with NPESC Capt Silvester bursary certificate presented to Jamie Prussin (see attached pics). There were approx 60 students from Nautical GSK\, Chartwork\, Basic Seamanship and MED Refreshers along with the school admin staff and instructors. It was fantastic to interact with all the students and promote membership and the benefits of NI and NIBC. We intend to continue this initiative and host lunches at BCIT in North Vancouver and Camosun College in Victoria. Please consider joining us for one of these future events. I would like to thank Capt Victor Gronmyr and Capt Norman Thomas for supporting this NIBC initiative today. \n     \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:BCIT 1st Year Cadet Tour of CCGS Sir Wilfred Grenfell – 09 Dec 2021 – Captain Rich Marriott AFNI (centre photo) hosted the BCIT 1st Year Navigation Cadets of the CCGS Sir Wilfred Grenfell. The CCGS Sir Wilfred Grenfell is currently at Allied Shipbuilders in North Vancouver nearing completion of a conversion from an offshore rescue platform to a navigation aid tender. Thanks to Jeff Otto (Cadet Coordinator) and Officer Cadet Jeremy Burrage AMNIS (5th from right) with their assistance in organizing.

The pillars of the navigation/deck Officers of the Royal Canadian Navy are Leader\, Manager\, Mariner\, and Warrior. The presentation emphasized the common areas of the first three pillars\, with a strong focus on Mariner – highlighting that the maritime domain has aspects that tie all mariners together.
